We have all been hungry in our lives, but for some of our Ulster and Dutchess county neighbors, this feeling is not a temporary condition. A 2012 study showed nearly one in five children and three in 20 Ulster County residents have lacked adequate food to meet basic nutritional needs at times. A 2013 study found over 31,000 Dutchess County residents face food insecurity. This represents more than one out of every ten people in Dutchess County.

Hudson Valley Current (HVC) Executive Director Chris Hewitt has over two decades of experience working in kitchens, and has spent the past five years volunteering to run the locally-acclaimed outdoor pizza oven in Accord, New York. Great events like this are what brings the community together—to share food, stories and music. Under Hewitt’s leadership, HVC wants to take this concept on the road to different communities in our region to provide local food to those in need.
