Q&A with Jasmine Wood, Education Director at Phillies Bridge Farm Project

Q: What makes Phillies Bridge Farm unique?

A: Phillies Bridge Farm is a vibrant, small-scale veggie CSA, nestled in the heart of New Paltz farm country. There are a handful of amazing and innovative CSA operations in the area. Phillies Bridge is unique in that education and food justice initiatives are integral components of our mission. Our education programs celebrate the seasons and aim to meaningfully connect participants of all ages to the origins of their food, nature and the local community. Through our Farm to Families program we work to distribute about 20 percent of our produce each season to families in need. In addition to facilitating access to fresh vegetables, we also provide educational opportunities for the program participants ranging from cooking and nutrition workshops at local social service agencies to on-farm site visits.

Q: What is your favorite part about what you do?

A: My favorite aspect of work at Phillies Bridge Farm is the expression on a child’s face when he or she first pulls a carrot fresh from the soil—it never grows old. It’s as if I can see the light bulb going off and I know a deep, almost ancestral connection is taking place! I also really look forward to the maple sugaring process each spring and watching folks young and old sip sap straight from the tree.

Q: How would you like to see Phillies Bridge grow?

A: I would like to see the Farm Project grow to have a greater reach in the community: adding farm-to-classroom to our list of education programs is at the top of my list, along with building a stronger network of local teachers and educators who are proponents of farm- and garden-based learning. In the future, it would be great to partner with other local farms and distributors to make our products available at local institutions, including public schools.
